歌词

[00:29.890]In the spring of 47

[00:36.880]So the story  it is told

[00:44.130]Old John Sutter went to the mill site

[00:51.210]Found a piece of shinin' gold

[00:58.390]Well  he took it to the city

[01:05.470]Where the word like wildfire spread

[01:12.580]And old John Sutter soon came to wish he'd

[01:19.690]Left that stone in the river bed

[01:26.940]For they came like herds of locusts

[01:34.130]Every woman  child and man

[01:41.290]In their lumberin' Conestogas

[01:48.350]They left their tracks upon the land

[01:55.580]Some would fail and some would prosper

[02:02.700]Some would die and some would kill

[02:09.920]Some would thank the Lord for their deliverance

[02:17.100]And some would curse John Sutter's Mill

[02:24.470]Well  they came from New York City

[02:31.640]And they came from Alabama

[02:38.810]With their dreams of findin' fortunes

[02:46.060]In this wild unsettled land

[02:53.180]Well  some fell prey to hostile arrows

[03:00.350]As they tried to cross the plains

[03:07.400]And some were lost in the Rocky Mountains

[03:14.700]With their hands froze to the reins

[03:21.440]Oh  some would fail and some would prosper

[03:28.930]Some would die and some would kill

[03:36.110]Some would thank the Lord for their deliverance

[03:43.280]And some would curse John Sutter's Mill

[04:18.980]Well  some pushed on to California

[04:26.190]And others stopped to take their rest

[04:33.060]And by the Spring of 1860

[04:40.540]They had opened up the West

[04:47.350]And then the railroad came behind them

[04:54.640]And the land was plowed and tamed

[05:01.630]When old John Sutter went to meet his maker

[05:08.870]He'd not one penny to his name

[05:15.550]Oh  some would fail and some would prosper

[05:22.980]Some would die and some would kill

[05:30.030]Some would thank the Lord for their deliverance

[05:37.270]And some would curse John Sutter's Mill

[05:44.370]And some would curse John Sutter's Mill

[05:51.550]Some men's thirsts are never filled
